Anticipato dal singolo Stand My Ground, The Silent Force non tarda a riscuotere un enorme successo e a guadagnarsi il disco di platino dopo 3 soli mesi dall'uscita. Ad oggi, infatti, l'album ha venduto più di 500 000 copie nel mondo. Anche i brani Memories ed Angels sono stati pubblicati come singoli e, in particolare quest'ultimo, ha fatto sì che i Within Temptation ricevessero – nei Paesi Bassi – il premio sia come migliore rock band sia come band più conosciuta all'estero.
Il nuovo album stilisticamente si distanzia parecchio dal precedente, le influenze dalla musica celtica apparse in Mother Earth vengono grossomodo ridimensionate a favore di imponenti orchestrazioni e arrangiamenti corali, stavolta non sintetici ma realizzati con l'ausilio di una vera orchestra di 80 elementi. Daniel Gibson, produttore dell'album, ha invece prestato il proprio ausilio anche per la composizione dei brani Stand My Ground, Aquarius e A Dangerous Mind.

  8. Jillian non è ispirata al film Butterfly Effect come molti pensano, in quanto la stessa Sharon den Adel ha smentito queste dicere in diverse interviste, dicendo invece che è ispirata alla Saga Fantasy Daggerspell.
  9. In un'intervista Sharon den Adel e Robert Westerholt hanno dichiarato che Forsaken è stata scritta in riferimento al Trattato di Kyoto, parla infatti di come gli esseri umani stiano distruggendo il pianeta attraverso l'inquinamento e la non curanza nei confronti dell'ambiente.

The Silent Force (englisch für „Die stille Kraft“) ist das dritte Musikalbum der niederländischen Band Within Temptation. Es wird dem Genre Symphonic Metal zugerechnet und sorgte mit Charterfolgen in vielen Ländern für den Durchbruch der Band in Europa.

The Silent Force is the third studio album by Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation, released on 15 November 2004, by GUN Records. On 5 August 2008, The Silent Force along with Mother Earth were released in the United States by Roadrunner Records. This album is the first to feature Ruud Jolie on lead guitar, as well as Martijn Spierenburg on keyboards, after Martijn Westerholt had to leave the band due to illness. It is also the first to feature Daniel Gibson as their producer. The album deepened the band symphonic approach, this time featuring more atmospheric songs that resemble the predominant fantasistic lyrics, inspired both by literature and the band members personal lives.
