Annunciato da Wilson il 16 luglio 2015, Transcience è stato presentato dallo stesso artista come «una personale [...] introduzione al lato più accessibile della mia carriera da solista» e contiene 12 brani originariamente pubblicati tra il 2003 e il 2015 (di cui tre in versione ridotta) più una rivisitazione del brano Lazarus, originariamente pubblicato dai Porcupine Tree nel 2004 in Deadwing.[2][3]

Il 16 settembre 2016 la raccolta è stata ripubblicata anche nei formati CD e download digitale con l'aggiunta del singolo Happiness III, originariamente tratto dall'EP 4 ½.[4]
