Accoglienza


Underneath the Tree ha ricevuto il plauso della critica di vari critici musicali al momento della sua uscita, che l'hanno elogiato come il punto culminante diWrapped in Red e una futura hit natalizia senza tempo. Marisa Fox di Billboard l'ha definita la «più grande sorpresa» dell'album, osservando che la melodia è ottimistica facendo sì che la Clarkson si avvalesse della voce in stile Darlene Love,[7] mentre Mikael Wood del Los Angeles Times l'ha descritta come «un singolo straordinariamente allegro e spumeggiante».[8] Sarah Rodman del The Boston Globe l'ha definita come «un brano rimbalzante, fatto su misura per le corse in slitta», elogiandola come la migliore traccia dell'album.[9]

Successo commerciale e impatto


Underneath the Tree ha esordito alla posizione numero 92 della Billboard Hot 100 il 21 dicembre 2013, raggiungendo la posizione 78 il 4 gennaio 2014.[15] Successivamente la canzone è rientrata in classifica ogni anno dalla sua pubblicazione,[16][17][18] raggiungendo nel 2020 la posizione più alta al numero 12.

Nel Regno Unito il singolo ha esordito nella Official Singles Chart alla posizione numero 79, raggiungendo la posizione 30 il 28 dicembre 2013.[19] Sette anni dopo la sua pubblicazione, la canzone è rientrata in classifica e raggiungendo la sua massima posizione ad oggi alla numero 15.[20] Al dicembre 2020 il brano ha venduto 780 000 unità nel Paese, ottenendo la certificazione di disco di platino dalla British Phonographic Industry.[21]

In un rapporto pubblicato dall'American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Underneath the Tree è stata indicata come la canzone natalizia originale più eseguita nel loro repertorio negli anni 2015[22], 2018[23], e 2019.[24]

"Underneath the Tree" is a song by American singer Kelly Clarkson from her sixth studio album and first Christmas album, Wrapped in Red (2013). She co-wrote the track with its producer Greg Kurstin. It is a Christmas-themed song that sings of gratitude for companionship during the holidays, in which the loved one is referred to as the only present needed "underneath the tree". Accompanied by various instrumental sounds, the song prominently incorporates a Wall of Sound treatment along with sleigh bells and bell chimes to resonate a holiday atmosphere. "Underneath the Tree" was first released to Adult Contemporary radio stations on November 5, 2013, by RCA Records as the album's lead single.
