Secondo quanto dichiarato da Steven Wilson, l'album rappresenta il vero e proprio debutto in studio a nome Porcupine Tree, motivando che il precedente On the Sunday of Life... fosse più una «raccolta di materiale giovanile», sperimentale e non ben focalizzato. Il disco figura inoltre alcuni brani realizzati con la partecipazione di alcuni ospiti, tra cui il bassista Colin Edwin e il tastierista Richard Barbieri, entrati successivamente in pianta stabile nel gruppo.

L'idea iniziale del progetto prevedeva la sua pubblicazione sotto forma di doppio album contenente anche il brano Voyage 34 (pubblicato a parte nel novembre 1992 nell'EP omonimo) e altri successivamente inclusi nell'EP Staircase Infinities. Solo con la ripubblicazione dell'album, avvenuta nel 2005, sono apparsi i brani di Staircase Infinities; la riedizione, inoltre, si caratterizza per le parti di batteria suonate interamente da Gavin Harrison, che hanno rimpiazzato quelle originariamente programmate da Wilson.[4]

Up the Downstair is the second studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, first released in June 1993. It was originally intended to be a double album set including the song "Voyage 34", which was instead released as a single in 1992, and other material that ended up on the Staircase Infinities EP (1994). In 2005, it was partially re-recorded, fully re-mixed, remastered and re-released along with the Staircase Infinities EP as a double album. The re-release contains a new mix by Steven Wilson, along with recorded drums by Gavin Harrison that replace the electronic drums of the original version. Another re-release on double vinyl was pressed on 14 August 2008 on Kscope records. This is identical to the 2005 release, except it is printed on coloured vinyl and the Staircase Infinities disc contains the song "Phantoms".[4]
