Il disco è stato annunciato dai due singoli "The Way You Used To Do" e "The Evil Has Landed", usciti rispettivamente il 15 giugno e il 10 agosto 2017. Homme ha dichiarato a proposito del titolo dell'album: «Il titolo Villains non è una dichiarazione politica. Non ha niente a che vedere con Trump o nessuna di quelle storie sulla politica. È semplicemente 1) una parola fantastica e 2) un commento sulle tre versioni di ogni scenario: il tuo, il mio e quello che è successo davvero.»[4] L'ultima traccia del disco "Villains of Circumstance" è stata già scritta precedentemente e cantata in un'esibizione live del 2014. L'album è stato posizionato all'8 posto dei 10 migliori album del 2017 dalla rivista americana Rolling Stone.

Villains ist das siebte Studioalbum von Queens of the Stone Age, das am 25. August 2017 durch das US-amerikanische Musiklabel Matador Records veröffentlicht wurde. Angekündigt wurde das Album am 15. Juni mit einem auf YouTube und Facebook veröffentlichten Video, das die Band bei einem Lügendetektortest zeigt. Zu hören sind dort Ausschnitte des Songs Feet Don’t Fail Me.[2][3][4] Die erste Single "The Way You Used to Do" erschien am nächsten Tag zusammen mit der Ankündigung einer Welttournee.[5]

Villains is the seventh studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age, released on August 25, 2017 through Matador. The album was announced on June 14, with a teaser trailer taking the form of a comedy skit featuring the band performing a polygraph test with Liam Lynch. The first single, "The Way You Used to Do", was released the following day along with the announcement of a world tour.[4][5] Villains is the first Queens of the Stone Age album to not feature any special guest musicians, the second to not feature Mark Lanegan, and the first to feature Jon Theodore as full time member of the band.[6]

L'album est annoncé le 14 juin 2017, accompagné d'une bande annonce sous forme d'une vidéo parodique, durant laquelle le groupe participe à un entretien avec le musicien Liam Lynch autour d'un détecteur de mensonge[1].
