Il 45 giri stazionò alla posizione numero 36 della classifica britannica dei singoli, divenendo il primo singolo della band a non entrare nella UK Top Twenty fin dai tempi delle prime cover.[1] Nonostante questo, la canzone era una delle preferite di John Lennon dei Beatles,[2] e, secondo quanto affermato da Ray Davies nella sua autobiografia, X-Ray, «qualcuno vide John Lennon in un locale che continuava a chiedere al disc jockey di suonare Wonderboy ancora ed ancora».[3] Il chitarrista dei Kinks Dave Davies lodò il brano, dicendo: «Wonderboy fu un brano importante per noi anche se non fu mai una hit. "Wonderboy" (sometimes spelled "Wonder Boy")[2] is a song by the English rock band the Kinks, released as a single in 1968. It stalled at number 36 in the UK charts, becoming the band's first single not to make the UK Top Twenty since their early covers.[3] Despite this, it became a favourite of John Lennon of the Beatles,[4] and, according to Ray Davies in his autobiography, X-Ray, "someone had seen John Lennon in a club and he kept on asking the disc jockey to play 'Wonder Boy' [sic] over and over again."[5] Kinks guitarist Dave Davies praised the song, saying, "'Wonderboy' was a big one for us although it wasn't a hit.
