El Rhythm and blues alternativo (también referido como alt-R&B, PBR&B, indie R&B, experimental R&B, hipster R&B y emo R&B[1][2][3]) es un término utilizado por críticos musicales para describir una alternativa de estilo al rhythm and blues contemporáneo.[4][5][6][7] El subgénero saltó a la fama a fines de la década de 2000 y finalmente se convirtió en un género popular en la década de 2010.

Alternative R&B[1] (auch Hipster R&B[2], Indie R&B[3], Future R&B[4] oder PBR&B[5]) ist ein Subgenre des Contemporary R&Bs, welches erstmals Ende der 2000er an großer Popularität gewann. Alternative R&B differenziert sich lyrisch als auch kompositorisch vom Contemporary R&B durch seine introvertierteren und vermeintlich aufrichtigeren Texte. Musikalisch wird mehr experimentiert und sich von elektronischen Genres wie Minimal, Dubstep als auch Rock beeinflusst. Besonders mit diesem Begriff assoziiert werden die Musiker Frank Ocean, Kelela und The Weeknd.
