Lord Huron is an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles. The band is composed of Mark Barry (drums, percussion), Miguel Briseño (bass, keyboard, theremin), Tom Renaud (guitar) and its founder, Ben Schneider (guitar, lead singer).[2] Following some solo and self-produced EPs, the group's debut album Lonesome Dreams was released in 2012[3] and their fourth and most recent album Long Lost was released in May 2021.[4]

Lord Huron combines western, folk rock, rock and roll, pop melodies, and the surf rock genres with soundtrack and new age influences to produce a novel sound described by The Wall Street Journal as having "a decidedly cinematic flair, heavy on mood and evocative imagery. Lord Huron brings to mind the high-lonesome sound of antecedents like the Band, Neil Young, My Morning Jacket and Fleet Foxes."[5] The band is most well-known for its hit single "The Night We Met".


History



Formation (2010–2011)


Founding member Ben Schneider began writing music in his hometown of Okemos, Michigan. Schneider went on to study visual arts at the University of Michigan and finished his degree in France, before moving to New York City where he worked for an artist.[6] In 2005, Schneider moved to Los Angeles. In 2010, Schneider formed Lord Huron as a solo project, recording his first few EPs entirely on his own and steadily adding members to help play in live shows.[7] The band's name was inspired by Lake Huron, the lake which Schneider grew up visiting.[6]


Lonesome Dreams (2012–2013)


Lord Huron's first full-length album, Lonesome Dreams, was released on October 9, 2012.[8] It debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart.[9]

With the release of Lonesome Dreams, the band also slowly released a series of music videos filmed in a western '70s style, which Schneider says was the focal point and narrative for the album. “We had this fun idea that Lonesome Dreams was kind of this series of old adventure tales.” In an interview, Schneider alluded to influence from a specific work, called The Collected Works of Billy the Kid: Left-Handed Poems.[10] "It's sort of a collection of pulp fiction and we wanted the videos to kind of reflect that and have that same feel and style,” Schneider said during another interview. They also decided to release a theatrical version of the videos.[11]


Strange Trails (2014–2017)


The band released their second album, Strange Trails, on April 6, 2015 in the UK and April 7, 2015 in the US. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 23, Folk Albums at No. 1, and No. 10 on the Top Album Sales chart with 18,000 copies sold.[12] The song "The Night We Met" was RIAA certified gold on June 26, 2017 and certified platinum on February 15, 2018.[13]


Vide Noir (2018–2020)


In January 2018, several short videos with audio clips on Lord Huron's official Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts led to speculation of an imminent album release.[14] The band's third album, Vide Noir, was officially announced to be released on April 20, 2018.[15]

On January 26, 2018, Lord Huron released their first single from the album, a two-part song called "Ancient Names".[16][17] On February 16, 2018, the band released the next single, "Wait by the River".[18] On March 7, 2018 they performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.[19]

Lord Huron performed an extended preview of Vide Noir on March 8, 2018, at Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, CA. They debuted five songs off the new album: "Ancient Names (Part I)", "Ancient Names (Part II)", "Wait by the River", "Never Ever", and "Vide Noir".[20] On March 27, 2018, they performed another preview set at Le Poisson Rouge in New York. They played the same five new songs as at Teragram Ballroom plus two more songs from the yet-to-be-released album, "When the Night Is Over" and "Back from the Edge".[21]

On the day of the album release, April 20, 2018, Lord Huron played an official release show in Grand Rapids in Schneider's home state of Michigan.[22]

On July 11, 2018, Lord Huron recorded two Spotify Singles, "When the Night is Over" and Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" at Spotify Studios.

On August 11, 2018, the band performed a medley of "Never Ever, When the Night is Over" and "Moonbeam" from Vide Noir on the CBS This Morning: Saturday Sessions.[23]


Long Lost (2021–present)


In December 2020, the band announced a collection of live-streamed shows entitled Alive from Whispering Pines. The first episode aired on January 7, 2021, and featured a clip of previously-unreleased material.[24] On February 19, 2021, a day after the second episode of Alive from Whispering Pines, the band released a new single, "Not Dead Yet".

On March 18, 2021, the third episode of Alive from Whispering Pines concluded with the supposed title of their upcoming fourth studio album, Long Lost, as well as an expected release date of May 21, 2021. This was confirmed when the album became available for pre-order on iTunes, Amazon, and other music vendors. On March 19, 2021, the "Mine Forever" single was released, which had been previewed in the second episode of Alive from Whispering Pines. On April 30, 2021, another single from Long Lost was released, "I Lied", featuring American singer-songwriter Allison Ponthier.[25]

The album was released on the band's Whispering Pines label on May 21, 2021 to mostly positive reviews.[26]

Their song "Ends of the Earth" has appeared numerous times onscreen. It plays during the end credits of the 12th episode of the third season of the Showtime television series Shameless and the 6th episode of the second season of FXX's Man Seeking Woman. "Ends of the Earth" also appears in the films Endless Love, Walking with Dinosaurs (2013), and A Walk in the Woods, as well as at the series finale of the TV show Community. It is also used in the series finale of the Netflix series Longmire, in the Netflix documentary Unbranded, and in TV commercials for jewelry company Zales, automaker Hyundai, and sporting-goods company Eddie Bauer. This song is also played during the end credits of the 2015 film, Road Hard. Country singer Kenny Chesney covered this song on his 2018 album Songs for the Saints. This song also appeared in the Netflix show Manifest in episode 5.

The song "The Night We Met" is used in the 5th episode of the fourth season of The Affair on Showtime, in the 22nd episode of the second season of The CW's The Originals, the 18th episode of the first season of The CW's The Flash, in the 4th episode of the second season of NBC's The Night Shift, and in the 5th episode of the first season of the Netflix television series 13 Reasons Why, and again in the 13th episode of the second season of the latter.[30] At the end of the last episode of season one of 9-1-1: Lone Star, "Austin, We Have a Problem".[31]

In the 2015 film Freeheld, the band's track "Louisa" is used in the country western dance scene where Julianne Moore and Elliot Page's characters are dancing together.

The band's track "Fool for Love" is used in the end credits of the episode "Wedding Day" of HBO's Girls and "Bonnie" of Lovesick, and was also featured in the Season 7 episode "Hyperion Heights" of Once Upon a Time.[32]

The songs "She Lit a Fire", "Ends of the Earth", "Brother", "The Ghost on the Shore", and the previously-unreleased track "The Birds are Singing at Night" are all used in the film A Walk in the Woods.[33]

Their song "The Yawning Grave" appears in the 11th episode of the seventh season of The CW's The Vampire Diaries.

The song "Lonesome Dreams" is used in the 7th episode of the first season of HBO's Togetherness.[34]

The song "When the Night is Over" appears in the 15th episode of the third season of Chicago Med and “TCM Remembers 2018”.

The song "Love Like Ghosts" appears in the 9th episode of the ninth season of Shameless.

The song "Time to Run" appears in the 12th episode of the ninth season of Grey's Anatomy. A version of the song recorded in Simlish appears on the soundtrack for The Sims 3: Seasons.

"Moonbeam" and "Ancient Names Pt. 1" are used in the 15th episode of the second season of The Good Doctor.

The Song "Meet Me In The Woods" of Album Strange Trails is briefly used in Season 3 Episode 1 of Titans.

The song “I Lied” is played during the Netflix show You during episode 3 of season 3.
