Biographie


Considéré comme l'un des pionniers du dub français[1], Martin Nathan fonde Brain Damage en 1999 à Saint-Étienne. D'abord accompagné du bassiste Raphaël Talis, puis seul, il se produit en live machine, c'est-à-dire en mixant en live avec des bandes enregistrées. Parallèlement, Martin poursuit une émission de radio hebdomadaire éponyme sur les ondes de Radio Dio[2]. L'EP Bipolar Disorder et le titre Brain Booster, façonnés chez Bangarang, deviendront très vite un support quotidien pour nombre d'animateurs dans les radios indépendantes et plurielles.

Au début des années 2000, Martin collabore avec certains maîtres du genre de la scène britannique (Zion Train, Alpha and Omega, The Disciples), et se produit à Londres au studio Conscious Sound en compagnie du MC Tena Stelin. Il compose deux albums sur le label parisien Hammerbass[3],[4] et rejoint en 2006 Jarring Effects pour une trilogie d’opus expérimentaux. En 2011, il met au point en compagnie du groupe High Tone le projet High Damage à l’apogée de la scène « French dub touch »[5]. Un an plus tard, il réalise Empire Soldiers en compagnie du britannique Steve Vibronics, autre pionnier du genre.

En 2015, c’est à Kingston qu’il confectionne la majeure partie du projet Talk the talk / Walk the walk, en compagnie d’idoles jamaïcaines comme Horace Andy, Willi Williams, Winston Mc Anuff, Kiddus I ou encore Ras Michael, pour un hommage aux créateurs de son style de prédilection. En 2017, Martin Nathan se tourne vers les États-Unis, pour une collaboration avec Harrison Stafford, leader de la formation Groundation. Un an plus tard, il se rend en Colombie pour produire un album entièrement en langue espagnole, lui permettant de s’affranchir des modèles anglo-saxons omniprésents, y compris dans sa production propre[6].

En 2021, l'artiste finalise le projet Brain Damage meets Big Youth- Beyond the Blue, en partenariat avec Big Youth[7].
