Death est un groupe de rock formé à Detroit, dans le Michigan, en 1971, par les frères Bobby (basse, chant), David (guitare), et Dannis (batterie) Hackney.

Le trio a commencé comme un groupe de funk mais est passé au rock après avoir vu un concert du groupe The Who[2]. Voir Alice Cooper jouer a également été une source d'inspiration[3]. Le critique de Musique Peter Margasak a rétrospectivement écrit que David « a poussé le groupe dans une direction hard-rock qui a préfiguré le punk, bien que cela ne les ait pas aidés à trouver une audience dans le milieu des années 70, aujourd'hui cela les apparente à des visionnaires ». Ils seraient considérés comme l'un des premiers groupes de punk au monde[4].

Le groupe s'est séparé en 1977, mais s'est reformé en 2009, lorsque le label Drag City a sorti pour la première fois leur démo des années 1970[5].

Death is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The trio started out as a funk band but switched to rock after seeing a concert by The Who.[1] Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration.[2] Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David "pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn't help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries" – David himself having been called "the visionary of the group".[2][3] They are seen by many people as one of the first punk bands in the world.[4] The band broke up in 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their 1975 studio recordings for the first time.[5]
