Le Super Rail Band de Bamako est un orchestre malien créé en 1970. Il mélange les rythmes modernes comme la rumba au rythme traditionnel mandingue.

Historique

En 1970, Tidiani Koné, saxophoniste et chef d'orchestre créé le Rail Band, l’orchestre du buffet de la gare de Bamako. Cet orchestre jouait deux fois par semaine. Le chanteur Salif Keïta rejoint rapidement le groupe suivi rapidement par Mory Kanté, qui y joue d’abord du Balafon avant de prendre la place de Salif Keïta comme chanteur principal. Le guitariste Djelimady Tounkara rejoint le groupe en 1971. En 1970, l’orchestre édite son premier disque intitulé « Sunjata »

En 1975, l’orchestre part en tournée au Nigeria et sort plusieurs albums l’année suivante. Dans les années 1980, le Rail Band organise une tournée en Afrique de l'Ouest.

En 1985, le groupe, rebaptisé Super Rail Band, sort un nouvel album « New Dimensions in Rail Culture ». En 1994, l’orchestre sort un album intitulé « Djougouya Magni ». En 1996, un nouvel album, « Mansa » sort et connaît une renommée internationale. Les chanteurs Damory Kouyaté et Samba Sissoko y participent. Leur dernier album, « Kongo Sigui » est sorti en 2003.

Même si Tidiani Koné, Salif Keïta et Mory Kanté ont quitté rapidement l’orchestre pour faire des carrières solo, le Super Rail Band reste un groupe mythique autour de Djelimady Tounkara.

The Rail Band is a Malian band formed in 1970; it was later known as Super Rail Band, Bamako Rail Band or, most comprehensively and formally, Super Rail Band of the Buffet Hotel de la Gare, Bamako. Its fame was built upon the mid-20th century craze for Latin — especially Cuban — jazz music which came out of Congo in the 1940s. The Rail Band was one of the first West African acts to combine this mature Afro-Latin sound with traditional instruments and styles. In their case, this was built upon the Mande Griot praise singer tradition, along with Bambara and other Malian and Guinean musical traditions. Their distinctive sound came from combining electric guitar and jazz horns with soaring Mandinka and Bamabara lyrical lines, African and western drums, and local instruments such as the kora and the balafon. At their height of fame in the 1970s, the Rail Band played to sold-out venues and even stadia across West Africa, and launched solo careers for many of its members, including the legendary vocalist Salif Keita.
