The Rezillos, aussi connu sous le nom The Revillos, est un groupe de punk rock et new wave britannique, originaire d'Édimbourg en Écosse. Il est formé en 1976 par Jo Callis, Fay Fife et Eugene Reynolds.

Biographie

Le groupe est formé à l'Edinburgh College of Art, où étudiait la formation originale des Rezillos. En 1975, les étudiants en arts Jo Callis et Alan Forbes joueront dans un groupe appelé The Knutsford Dominators, qui reprendra des chansons rock and roll des années 1950 et 1960 : Forbes était à l'origine l'un des deux premiers batteurs du groupe[1]^,[2]. The Knutsford Dominators se séparent, mais Callis et Forbes voulaient faire de la musique dans cette même veine. Le duo recrute le bassiste local Dave Smythe et l'étudiant en architecture Mark Sinclair Harris[1] à la seconde guitare, et forment leur nouveau groupe, les Rezillos en mars 1976. Le nom de leur groupe s'inspire du nom d'un club appelé Revilos qui apparaitra dans la première édition du comic book The Shoadow de DC Comics en novembre 1973[2]^,[3]. Au départ, Callis, Forbes et Harris partageaient le chant. En octobre 1978, le groupe enregistre un nouveau single, Destination Venus, avec le producteur Martin Rushent au studio The Manor, pour une sortie le mois prochain.

Le groupe se sépare en 1978. Après cette séparation, le guitariste Callis, le bassiste Templar et le batteur Paterson formeront Shake avec Troy Tate, publiant un EP et deux singles (ce dernier sous le nom de Jo Callis/S.H.A.K.E. Project)[2]. Le groupe s'avère un échec, et après sa dissolution, Paterson et Tate forment un autre groupe appelé TV21, également sans grand succès[4]. Ils décideront de ranimer The Rezillos, mais sous le nom de The Revillos.

Le groupe se reforme sous The Rezillos en 2001. En novembre 2011, le groupe participe avec la Sir Reo Stakis Foundation Legend Award au Tartan Clef Awards[5]^,[6] et publient un single, Out Of This World, en décembre 2011. En novembre 2012, les Rezillos entreprennent leur première tournée nord-américaine.

The Rezillos ist eine Punkband, die 1976 in Edinburgh gegründet wurde. Die Musiker sind Autodidakten an ihren Instrumenten. Beeinflusst vom Glamrock spielten sie häufig Coverversionen, hatten aber auch eigene Hits, die sie in die Top 20 der britischen Charts brachten. Die Band löste sich im Dezember 1978 auf, formierte sich im Jahr 1979 neu unter dem veränderten Namen The Revillos und trat bis Mitte der 1990er Jahre immer wieder mit wechselnder Besetzung auf bis die Mitglieder wieder getrennte Wege gingen. Seit dem Jahr 2001 tritt die Gruppe erneut als The Rezillos in Erscheinung. Seitdem spielen sie regelmäßig im Vereinigten Königreich, in Europa und in Übersee. 2015 wurde ihr Album Zero veröffentlicht.

The Rezillos are a punk/new wave band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1976. Although emerging at the same time as other bands in the punk rock movement, the Rezillos did not share the nihilism or social commentary of their contemporaries, but instead took a more light-hearted approach in their songs, preferring to describe themselves at the time as "a new wave beat group".[1] Their songs are heavily influenced by 1950s rock and roll, 1960s English beat music and garage rock, early 1970s glam rock, with recurring lyrical themes of science fiction and B movies; their influences mirrored those of US bands the Cramps and the B-52s, who were starting out at the same time. The Rezillos' biggest hit in their home country was the UK Top 20 single "Top of the Pops" in 1978, but they are best known outside the UK for their cover version of "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight", which was featured on the soundtrack to Jackass: The Movie in 2002. Since the Rezillos recorded it, the song has been covered by other punk bands, including Youth Brigade and Murphy's Law.
