Si fanno conoscere dal grande pubblico suonando a spalla di Eric Clapton al Rainbow Theatre di Londra nel 1973.

Il genere musicale che li rappresenta va dal Blue-eyed soul al funk, dal soul alla disco.

Nel 1975 si portano nella prima posizione della classifica americana Billboard Hot 100 con il singolo Pick Up the Pieces.

Die Average White Band, auch kurz AWB, stammt aus Schottland, und ist eine der wenigen europäischen Soulbands, die mit schwarzer Musik populär wurden. Sie wurde 1972 von Alan Gorrie, Roger Ball, Malcolm „Molly“ Duncan († 2019), Robbie McIntosh († 1974), Hamish Stuart und Onnie McIntyre gegründet. Ihr Name („Durchschnittliche weiße Band“ beziehungsweise „Im Durchschnitt weiße Band“) bezieht sich sowohl darauf, dass alle Gründungsmitglieder Weiße waren, als auch auf die Bemerkung eines Freundes, die Musik sei „zuviel für den durchschnittlichen Weißen“.[1]

They are best known for their million-selling instrumental track "Pick Up the Pieces", and their albums AWB and Cut the Cake. The band name was initially proposed by Bonnie Bramlett. They have influenced others, such as the Brand New Heavies, and been sampled by various musicians, including the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, TLC, The Beatnuts, Too Short, Ice Cube, Eric B. & Rakim, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Leena Conquest, Christina Milian, and Arrested Development,[2] making them the 15th most sampled act in history.[3] As of 2022, 50 years after their formation, they continue to perform.
