Il gruppo si forma in seguito al primo scioglimento dei Jane's Addiction nel 1991, e comprende Perry Farrell alla voce, Peter DiStefano alla chitarra, Martyn LeNoble al basso e Stephen Perkins alla batteria. Il nome viene dato da Farrell dopo aver visto una foto pubblicitaria per fuochi d'artificio (pyros in inglese) su una rivista pornografica. Già prima di pubblicare il loro primo disco, Porno for Pyros nel 1993, il gruppo intraprende un lungo tour mondiale, che aiuterà l'album a risalire fino al terzo posto della classifica Billboard Top 200. Nel 1996 pubblicano il secondo album, Good God's Urge, con l'ex bassista dei Minutemen Mike Watt a terminare le parti di basso lasciate dal dimissionario LeNoble e a intraprendere al suo posto il tour promozionale per l'album. Il gruppo si scioglierà quando verrà diagnosticato il cancro a DiStefano nel 1998.
