Il gruppo è originario di Louisville (Kentucky) ed è stato fondato dal chitarrista dei Rodan Jason B. Noble. Successivamente si sono aggregati Christian Frederickson (viola) e Rachel Grimes (piano ed organo). La musica dei Rachel's è influenzata dalla musica minimale del ventesimo secolo ma anche dal lungo percorso delle avanguardie fino ai giorni nostri[1]. Il nucleo centrale della band è costituito da Rachel Grimes (piano ed organo) Jason B. Noble (chitarra e basso) e Christian Frederickson (viola) ma per le registrazioni degli album ufficiali l'ensemble si allarga fino ad un'orchestra full range raggiungendo il numero di venti musicisti coinvolti per la realizzazione di The Sea and the Bells, il terzo album dell'ensemble[2].
La band si è sciolta il 4 agosto 2012, giorno in cui Noble è morto per una rara forma di cancro[3]. Rachel Grimes, cuore pianistico dell'ensemble, ha continuato la sua attività come musicista solista pubblicando Book of Leaves[4] e The Clearing, quest'ultimo con la partecipazione di Christian Frederickson e Kyle Crabtree, già parte del progetto originario[5].

Rachel's were an American chamber music group that formed in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1991. Former Rodan guitarist Jason Noble played music individually and referred to himself as Rachel's but then began collaborating with core members violist Christian Frederickson and pianist Rachel Grimes. The group's work was strongly influenced by classical music, particularly inspired by the minimalist music of the late 20th century, and its compositions reflect this. While the trio formed the core part of the band, the group's recordings and performances featured a varying ensemble of musicians, who played a range of string instruments (including viola and cello) in combination with piano, guitars, electric bass guitar, and a drum set that included a large orchestral bass drum. A key influence on the music of Rachel's was the music of the English composer Michael Nyman, whose music the group's work resembles in both instrumentation and compositional style.[fr] Rachel's
