Storia
La band si è formata nel 1985 a Minneapolis, Minnesota ed è composta da Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman e Norm Rogers[1] Il loro primo omonimo album è stato prodotto da una piccola casa discografica indipendente nel 1986, seguito tre anni dopo da Blue Earth-
Un giorno del 1991, Dave Ayers, presidente della casa discografica Twin Tone, era al telefono con il suo omonimo dell'American Recordings, George Drakoulias. Durante la conversazione Dave Ayers teneva in sottofondo la canzone Blue Earth dei Jayhawks. Il presidente dell'American Records chiese di chi fosse tale brano e così decise di conoscere il gruppo e di produrgli gli album successivi.[1]
Nel 1992 pubblicarono Hollywood Town Hall per Def American, album che li fece conoscere a livello nazionale grazie anche al singolo Waiting for the Sun.[2]
Nel 1995 uscì Tomorrow the Green Grass, anno un cui usci dal gruppo Mark Olson per stare vicino alla moglie Victoria Williams malata di sclerosi multipla.[3] L'attività del gruppo continuo fino al 2005. Olson e Louris pubblicarono un album nel 2008 Ready for the Flood.
Ci fu una reunion nel 2011 che vide il ritorno di Olson e che portò alla pubblicazione di un nuovo album Mockingbird Time. Olson se ne andò di nuovo ma il gruppo continuò con la pubblicazione di altri tre album con Louris alla guida: Paging Mr. Proust del 2016 prodotto da Peter Buck e Tucker Martine, Back Roads and Abandoned Motels del 2018 e l'ultimo XOXO in pubblicazione a luglio 2020.

The Jayhawks are an American alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene in the mid-1980s. Led by vocalists/guitarists/songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson, their country rock sound was influential on many bands who played the Twin Cities circuit during the 1980s and 1990s, such as Uncle Tupelo, the Gear Daddies and the Honeydogs. They have released eleven studio albums, with and without Olson (who left the band for the first time in 1995), including five on the American Recordings label. After going on hiatus from 2005 to 2009, the 1995 lineup of the band reunited and released the album Mockingbird Time in September 2011; Olson left the band for the second time after the tour to promote the album. After another hiatus in 2013, the 1997 lineup led by Louris reunited to play shows in 2014 to support the reissue of three albums originally released between 1997 and 2003. Since then, the band has continued to tour and record, releasing the albums Live at The Belly Up in 2015; Paging Mr. Proust, co-produced by Peter Buck, in 2016; Back Roads and Abandoned Motels in 2018; and XOXO (The Jayhawks album) in 2020.[fr] The Jayhawks
