Ben Keith est un guitariste américain, né à Fort Riley au (Kansas) le 6 mars 1937 et décédé le 27 juillet 2010 en Californie[1]. Il est surtout connu pour avoir joué avec le chanteur et guitariste canadien Neil Young, il jouait surtout de la guitare pedal steel.

Biographie

Musicien de studio à Nashville durant les années 1950 et 1960, il a participé à de nombreuses formations majeures de la scène rock depuis les années 1970, en particulier avec Neil Young, d'abord comme membre du groupe The Stray Gators sur l'album Harvest. Leur amitié dura 40 ans au fil d'un vingtaine d'albums et de nombreuses tournées.

Il a en outre collaboré avec Terry Reid, Todd Rundgren, Lonnie Mack, The Band, Bob Dylan pour le single ''George Jackson'', David Crosby, Graham Nash, Paul Butterfield, J. J. Cale, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Anne Murray et Ringo Starr sur l'album country Beaucoups of Blues.

Il joua le rôle de "Grandpa Green" dans le film de Neil Young Greendale.

Il mourut brutalement à 73 ans d'une embolie pulmonaire, dans la maison qu'il habitait au ranch de Neil Young à La Honda, Californie.

Bennett Keith Schaeufele (March 6, 1937 – July 26, 2010), better known by his stage name Ben Keith, was an American musician and record producer. Known primarily for his work as a pedal steel guitarist with Neil Young, Keith was a fixture of the Nashville country music community in the 1950s and 1960s before working with numerous successful rock, country and pop artists as both a producer and versatile, multi-instrumentalist sideman for over four decades. Neil Young affectionately referred to him as "Long Grain" (a joking word play reference to a variety of Uncle Ben's Rice and to Ben's height). Keith was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014.
