Vijay Iyer, né le 26 octobre 1971 à Rochester (New York), est un pianiste de jazz d'origine indienne.

Biographie

Ses parents émigrent aux États-Unis dans les années 1960. Il commence son apprentissage musical dès ses 3 ans par l'étude du violon, puis à l'âge de ses 6 ans pour le piano.

En 1992, il obtient une maîtrise de mathématiques et physique à l'Université Yale, et 2 ans plus tard en 1994 un master en physique et un doctorat en technologie et arts à l'Université de Californie (Berkeley). C'est alors qu'il se présente à Steve Coleman lors d'une résidence des Five Elements Il est encore indécis sur le choix d'une profession. Mais son engagement par Steve Coleman pour une tournée avec son groupe The Mystic Rythm & Society marque le choix de la carrière musicale, concrétisée par la parution de son premier album, Memorophilia, en 1996 sur le label Asian Improv Records[1].

Vijay Iyer [ˌvɪdʒeɪ ˈaɪjər][1] (born October 26, 1971) is an American composer, pianist, bandleader, producer and writer based in New York City. The New York Times has called him a "social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway".[2] Iyer received a 2013 MacArthur Fellowship,[3] a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artists Fellowship,[4] a Grammy nomination,[5] and the Alpert Award in the Arts.[6] He was voted Jazz Artist of the Year in the DownBeat magazine international critics' polls in 2012,[7] 2015,[8] 2016,[9] and 2018.[10] In 2014, he received a lifetime appointment as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University, where he was jointly appointed in the Department of Music[11] and the Department of African and African American Studies.[12]
