Biografia

Nato a Città del Capo nel 1934, cresce ascoltando musica tradizionale africana, gospel, musica sacra e jazz. Inizia a suonare il piano all'età di 7 anni e a 15 diventa già un professionista.[1] La sua carriera ottiene un incisivo impulso dopo l'incontro con Kippi Moeketsi, avvenuto nel 1959. Egli lo convince a dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla musica. Incontra inoltre Sathima Bea Benjamin, che diventa compagna della sua vita. I due sono genitori della rapper statunitense Jean Grae, nata nel 1976.[1]

Negli anni '60, a causa della grave crisi civile sudafricana, si trasferisce con la moglie prima in Svizzera e poi a New York. Da qui inizia a percorrere importanti strade nel mondo jazz. Si converte all'Islam assumendo il nome Abdullah Ibrahim nel 1968.[1]

Nel 1999 fonda una scuola di musica a Città del Capo. Attualmente, oltre a suonare e comporre, è anche insegnante di musica.

Abdullah Ibrahim (arabisch عبد الله إبراهيم, Geburtsname Adolph Johannes Brand; * 9. Oktober 1934 in Kapstadt) ist ein südafrikanischer Pianist und Komponist. Daneben spielt er auch Flöte, Saxophon und Cello. Abdullah Ibrahim gilt als Protagonist des Modern-Creative-Stils in der Jazzmusik. Bevor er seinen aktuellen Namen mit seiner Konversion zum Islam Ende der 1960er Jahre annahm, nannte er sich Dollar Brand. Seine Komposition Mannenberg galt unter dem Apartheid-Regime zeitweise als Hymne der nicht-weißen Bevölkerung Südafrikas.[2]

Abdullah Ibrahim (born Adolph Johannes Brand on 9 October 1934 and formerly known as Dollar Brand) is a South African pianist and composer. His music reflects many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church and Ragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. Ibrahim is considered the leading figure in the subgenre of Cape jazz. Within jazz, his music particularly reflects the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. He is known especially for "Mannenberg", a jazz piece that became a notable anti-apartheid anthem.[1]
