È stato membro della band a partire da luglio 1977 fino a settembre 1979, suonando sugli album The Scream e Join Hands. McKay ha composto la melodia del loro primo singolo di successo, Hong Kong Garden, così come gran parte del materiale dei due primi LP della band.
McKay ha lasciato il gruppo dopo l'uscita del secondo album, Join Hands. In seguito ha guidato brevemente un trio chiamato Zor Gabor che ha pubblicato nel 1987 tre canzoni su un EP 12”, Tightrope, per l'etichetta In Tape. È stato premiato "Record of the Week" da NME.

John McKay is an English songwriter and guitarist. He was the first studio guitarist of Siouxsie and the Banshees. He was a member of the group from July 1977 until September 1979. He played a "jagged unorthodox chording",[1] and created a "metal-shard roar" with his guitar.[2] Q magazine included McKay's work on "Hong Kong Garden" in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Tracks Ever".[3] He recorded two studio albums with the band, their debut album The Scream in 1978 and the sophomore album Join Hands in 1979.- [it] John McKay (musicista)
