Biografia
Fin dagli anni sessanta, Meredith Monk ha messo in scena lavori multidisciplinari che abbracciano musica, teatro e danza:

La Monk è conosciuta soprattutto per le sue profonde innovazioni sull'uso del canto, arricchito da una vasta serie di tecniche che ella sviluppò innanzitutto nelle sue performance solistiche, prima di formare il suo proprio ensemble. Nel dicembre 1961, apparì all'Actor's Playhouse del Greenwich Village di New York come ballerina di una produzione teatrale off-Broadway, versione musicale per bambini del Canto di Natale di Charles Dickens, intitolata Scrooge (musica e parole di Norman Curtis; coreografia e direzione di Patricia Taylor Curtis). Nel 1964, si diploma al Sarah Lawrence College e, nel 1968, fonda The House, una compagnia dedicata all'approccio interdisciplinare alla performance teatrale.
Le performance della Monk hanno influenzato molti artisti, tra cui Bruce Nauman, che ebbe modo di conoscere i suoi lavori nel 1968 a San Francisco. Nel 1978, la Monk forma Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble (sulla falsariga di ensemble quali quelle di Steve Reich e Philip Glass), al fine di esplorare nuovi e più ampi panorami vocali, sottolineati dal contrasto con minimali tessiture musicali. A questo periodo appartiene Dolmen Music (1980-1981), inciso dall'etichetta ECM.

Her music has been used in films by the Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski, 1998) and Jean-Luc Godard (Nouvelle Vague, 1990 and Notre musique, 2004).
