Ha suonato nella demo del 1990 Reincremation, nell'EP Human Waste del 1991, nell'album di debutto Effigy of the Forgotten del 1991, nel successivo album Breeding the Spawn. Dopo la sua uscita dalla band è stato rimpiazzato da Doug Bohn. È quindi tornato nel 2002, ed ha inciso Souls to Deny nel 2004 e l'omonimo album nel 2006. È considerato tra i più dotati batteristi death, e nel suo stile è possibile riconoscere i tipici blast beat che moltissime band usano e che caratterizzano il drumming del brutal death metal. Ha partecipato al progetto Roadrunner United, dove ha suonato nella canzone "Dawn of a Golden Age".

Mike Smith (born July 16, 1971 in Bronx, New York)[1] is an American multi-instrumentalist, best known as the founding member and former drummer of the prominent New York-based technical death metal band Suffocation.[2] He performed on their 1990 demo Reincremated, the 1991 EP, Human Waste, their 1991 debut album Effigy of the Forgotten, and their 1993 album Breeding the Spawn. He then departed from the band and was subsequently replaced before the bands departure from the scene in 1998. Smith returned when Suffocation reformed in 2002 after a four-year hiatus and performed on their 2004 release, Souls to Deny, their 2006 self-titled album, and 2009's Blood Oath. Smith (as a member of Suffocation) was Inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2011. Smith left Suffocation for the second time in February 2012.
