Musical style and influence

In 2020, Morton described his music as "triumphant, bright and sunny."[2] His sound is often compared to that of Earl Sweatshirt, with whom he shares a monotonous and cold rapping delivery.[3] He names Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, The Creator, J. Cole and $uicideboy$ as his top five rappers.[4] He believes that the online music world has contributed more to shaping his sound more than the local music scene in PG County.[5]

Redveil began making beats at age 11 with FL Studio after hearing the song "Palace/Curse" by The Internet and Tyler, The Creator, later enrolling for piano lessons.[1] However, it was not until December 2016 that he started "taking music seriously" and first released original songs.[5]

Critical reception and praise from other artists

A writer for online music publication Okayplayer called Morton "the DMV's next great hope" in an interview discussing his 2022 album, Learn 2 Swim.[6] In 2020, another publication wrote: "[Redveil] is 16 rapping like he’s in his 20s."[5] Music publication Pitchfork gave Learn 2 Swim a score of 8.0.[1]

His song "Drown" featuring Donte Thomas and D'Mari Harris has been cosigned by Tyler, The Creator.[7] The track also made his year-end list of favorite songs in 2020.[8] Other notable artists who have cosigned Redveil include JID,[9] Deante' Hitchcock,[10] and Denzel Curry, whose 2022 world tour he supported at select dates.[11] Redveil was also a supporting act at 11 shows during Freddie Gibbs' Space Rabbit Tour, where Mike also performed.[12]
