Uttam Kamble (Marathi: उत्तम कांबळे) is an Indian journalist who has been the Chief Editor of Sakal Media Group. He is a post-modern author, with around 63 published books.[1] He has been in journalism for more than three decades. He is best known for his oratory, poetry and his writings for the oppressed and deprived class. He has also been the President of the 84th Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan,[2] the single largest literary meet, surviving great tradition in Marathi. He also inaugurated the 16th Kamgar Sahitya Sammelan (February 2011) in the Satara district of Maharashtra, which was presided over by Ramdas Phutane.

Early life

Uttam Kamble was born on 31 May 1956 into poverty in a rural area of Chikkodi Taluka in the Belagum district of Karnataka. This geographic area has a mixed population of Kannada and Marathi speaking communities. He experienced hardship during his childhood. His mother was an illiterate laborer. Young Uttam used to help her with work during his childhood. He is the first person to be educated in his family. During his youth, he worked various jobs including compounding, construction work, sales and paper-boy, while still continuing his education.

Career

Uttam Kamble graduated from Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) degree. After graduation in 1979, he joined a small daily newspaper named Samaj (Marathi: समाज). He joined the Sakal Group in 1982 and remained there for the rest of his career.
