Brenda Hillman, née à Tucson dans l'état de l'Arizona, le 17 mars 1951, est une poète, éditrice, traductrice et professeur d'université américaine. Elle a été élue chancelière de l'Academy of American Poets en 2016 et membre de l'American Academy of Arts And Sciences en 2017. Elle est titulaire de la chaire de poésie Olivia Filippi au St. Mary’s College[1] de Moraga, Californie.

Biographie

Après ses études secondaires au Pomona College[2], elle entre à l'université d'Iowa où elle obtiendra son Master of Fine Arts[3].

En 1976, elle épouse l'écrivain Leonard Michaels, ensemble ils auront une fille Louisa, ils divorcent dans les années 1980[4], plus tard elle se marie en 1995 avec le poète Robert Hass[5].

Dès la parution de son premier recueil la critique fut élogieuse, notant son lyrisme ; avec la parution de Loose Sugar en 1997, elle est considérée comme une poète majeure sur la scène des États-Unis.

Elle a dirigé en 2009, une édition des œuvres poétiques d'Emily Dickinson, avec Patricia Dienstfrey, elle a dirigé l'anthologie "The Grand Permission: New Writings on Poetics and Motherhood ", enfin avec Paul Ebenkamp, elle a co-édité Writing the Silences, New California Poetry.

Elle vit à Bay Area avec son mari le poète Robert Hass[6].

Brenda Hillman (born March 27, 1951 in Tucson, Arizona) is an American poet and translator.[1] She is the author of ten collections of poetry: White Dress, Fortress, Death Tractates, Bright Existence, Loose Sugar, Cascadia, Pieces of Air in the Epic, Practical Water, for which she won the LA Times Book Award for Poetry, Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire, which received the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize and the Northern California Book Award for Poetry, and Extra Hidden Life, among the Days, which was awarded the Northern California Book Award for Poetry. Among the awards Hillman has received are the 2012 Academy of American Poets Fellowship, the 2005 William Carlos Williams Prize for poetry, and Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. A professor of Creative Writing, she holds the Olivia Filippi Chair in Poetry at Saint Mary's College of California, in Moraga, California. Hillman is also involved in non-violent activism as a member of the Code Pink Working Group in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2016, she was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.[2]
