Jabrâ Ibrâhîm Jabrâ (جَبرا إبراهيم جَبرا), né le 28 août 1919 à Bethléem et mort le 12 décembre 1994 à Bagdad, est un romancier, poète, critique, dramaturge, mémorialiste et peintre arabe palestinien. Il est unanimement considéré comme l'un des écrivains les plus importants de la littérature arabe contemporaine[1].

Biographie

Jabrâ est né à Bethléem, en Palestine sous mandat britannique, dans une famille arabe chrétienne orthodoxe, qui vit pauvrement[2]. Il étudie à Jérusalem, puis à Cambridge avant de revenir à Jérusalem où il est nommé professeur de littérature anglaise[3]. Après la guerre israélo-arabe de 1948, il s'exile et s'installe en Irak, et continue à enseigner la littérature anglaise à l'université, tout en participant participant activement au débat culturel du pays. C'est ainsi qu'en 1951, en compagnie de deux artistes irakiens, Jawad Saleem et Shakir Hassan Al Said, il fonde le Groupe de Bagdad pour l'art moderne (Baghdad Group for Modern Art)[4].

Son œuvre compte plus de soixante dix œuvres, entre romans, poèmes, études et traductions. Les ouvrages de Jabrâ ont été traduits dans plusieurs langues.

Jabra Ibrahim Jabra (28 August 1919[1] – 12 December 1994[2]) (Arabic: جبرا ابراهيم جبرا) was a Iraqi-Palestinian author, artist and intellectual born in Adana in French-occupied Cilicia to a Syriac Orthodox Christian family.[3] His family survived the Seyfo Genocide and fled to the British Mandate of Palestine in the early 1920s.[1] Jabra was educated at government schools under the British-mandatory educational system in Bethlehem and Jerusalem, such as the Government Arab College, and won a scholarship from the British Council to study at the University of Cambridge. Following the events of 1948, Jabra fled Jerusalem and settled in Baghdad, where he found work teaching at the University of Baghdad. In 1952 he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities fellowship to study English literature at Harvard University. Over the course of his literary career, Jabra wrote novels, short stories, poetry, criticism, and a screenplay. He was a prolific translator of modern English and French literature into Arabic. Jabra was also an enthusiastic painter, and he pioneered the Hurufiyya movement, which sought to integrate traditional Islamic art within contemporary art through the decorative use of Arabic script.
