Mary Robinson (27 novembre 1757 - 26 décembre 1800) fut une poétesse, femme de lettres et féministe anglaise.

Biographie

Née à Bristol, elle fut mariée dès l'âge de quinze ans à un avocat qui la laissa sans ressources. Elle entra alors au théâtre et s'y fit bientôt une réputation par son talent et sa beauté. Elle devint ainsi la maîtresse en titre du prince de Galles (depuis George IV) qu'elle aima passionnément jusqu'à la fin de sa vie, puis eut plus tard une liaison intime avec Fox qui l'exploita également sans vergogne. Elle finit par se consacrer aux lettres, ce qui lui valut son surnom de Sapho anglaise.

Elle laisse des mémoires posthumes mis en ordre et édités par sa fille où elle narre ses malheurs et son amour malheureux pour le prince de Galles.

Comme sa contemporaine Mary Wollstonecraft, elle soutint ardemment les idées nouvelles de la Révolution française, et défendit les droits de la femme.

Mary Robinson (née Darby; 27 November 1757 – 26 December 1800) was an English actress, poet, dramatist, novelist, and celebrity figure. She lived in England, in the cities of Bristol and London; she also lived in France and Germany for a time. She enjoyed poetry from the age of seven and started working, first as a teacher and then as actress, from the age of fourteen. She wrote many plays, poems and novels. She was a celebrity, gossiped about in newspapers, famous for her acting and writing. During her lifetime she was known as "the English Sappho".[1][2] She earned her nickname "Perdita" for her role as Perdita (heroine of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) in 1779. She was the first public mistress of King George IV while he was still Prince of Wales.
