È stato pubblicizzato come "Il barone del Boogie" (The Baron of the Boogie), e soprannominato anche "L'uomo vivente più felice" (The Happiest Man Alive).[1]

Biografia

Hunter è nato a Kirbyville, in Texas. Ivory Joe Hunter era il suo nome di battesimo, non un soprannome, né un nome d'arte.

Da giovane, Hunter ha sviluppato un precoce interesse per la musica dal padre, Dave Hunter, chitarrista, e il canto gospel grazie alla madre. Già all'età di 13 anni era un talentuoso pianista e, diciannovenne, ha fatto la sua prima registrazione per Alan Lomax e la Library of Congress nel 1933.

Hunter è morto nel 1974 all'età di 60 anni a causa di un cancro ai polmoni mentre si trovava a Memphis. È sepolto nella sua nativa Kirbyville.[1]

Ivory Joe Hunter (October 10, 1914 – November 8, 1974)[1] was an American rhythm-and-blues singer, songwriter, and pianist. After a series of hits on the US R&B chart starting in the mid-1940s, he became more widely known for his hit recording "Since I Met You Baby" (1956). He was billed as The Baron of the Boogie, and also known as The Happiest Man Alive. His musical output ranged from R&B to blues, boogie-woogie, and country music, and Hunter made a name in all of those genres. Uniquely, he was honored at both the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Grand Ole Opry.[2]
