Biografia

Nato a Detroit nel 1945, Souther crebbe ad Amarillo (Texas), terra alla quale si possono facilmente ricondurre le sue origini musicali country.[1] Durante gli studi superiori fece parte di un gruppo musicale chiamato John David & the Senders (conosciuto anche come The Cinders). Successivamente si trasferì a Los Angeles, dove lavorò come session man, impiego grazie al quale conobbe Glenn Frey, con cui condivise l'abitazione per un breve periodo.[1] Nel 1969 Souther e Frey formarono un duo chiamato Longbranch Pennywhistle e pubblicarono un album omonimo con la Amos Records.[1]

Il rapporto con Glenn Frey si rivelò vantaggioso per Souther, specialmente in seguito, quando collaborò con gli Eagles scrivendo per loro brani di successo come Best of My Love, Heartache Tonight e New Kid in Town.[1] Prima di formare gli Eagles, Frey aveva suonato in un gruppo di Linda Ronstadt; da questa conoscenza di Frey sarebbe sfociata una lunga collaborazione fra Souther e Linda. Egli infatti produsse l'album Don't Cry Now per la band di quest'ultima, cantandovi anche qualche seconda voce.[1] Da allora, molti album di Linda Ronstadt contennero brani scritti da Souther, il quale continuò a contribuire anche nelle parti vocali. In seguito, David Geffen spinse Souther a formare il gruppo Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, con Chris Hillman e Richie Furay; il trio pubblicò due album, prima di sciogliersi nel 1975.[1]

Nel frattempo Souther iniziò la sua carriera solista, pubblicando quattro album fra il 1972 e il 1984: John David Souther, Black Rose, You're Only Lonely e Home by Dawn.[1] Fece anche da turnista per Don Henley e Danny Kortchmar e collaborò con James Taylor per il brano Her Town Too, apparso nell'album del 1981 Dad Loves His Work.[1]

Tornò sulla scena musicale soltanto nel secolo successivo, pubblicando gli album If the World Was You (2008) e A Natural History (2011).[1]

È del 1990 la cover, presente nella colonna sonora del film "Always - Per sempre", di "Smoke gets in your eyes", canzone di successo dei Platters nel 1959.

John David Souther (born November 2, 1945)[2] is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He has written and co-written songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Souther is probably best known for his songwriting abilities, especially in the field of country rock. He co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", and "New Kid in Town". "How Long", which appears on the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden, was written by Souther and originally recorded on his first solo album in 1972. Souther recorded two major hit songs in his solo career: "You're Only Lonely" (1979) and "Her Town Too" (1981), a duet with longtime friend James Taylor.
