Biografia

Nato in Louisiana cresciuto a Memphis (Tennessee), negli anni '60 si è trasferito in Canada per evitare l'arruolamento che l'avrebbe portato a combattere la guerra del Vietnam.[1] Ha lavorato durante i primi anni di carriera con Robbie Robertson della Band e nel 1970 ha pubblicato il suo primo omonimo album.

Nel 1973 è diventato cittadino canadese. Soltanto nel 2002 è ritornato negli Stati Uniti e si è stabilizzato in Virginia.[1]

Le sue canzoni sono state registrate da Elvis Costello, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris e altri grandi artisti. Tra i suoi brani più famosi vi sono Yankee Lady (1970) e Say What (1981).[1]

È morto nell'aprile 2014 all'età di 69 anni. Tre anni prima gli era stato diagnosticato un tumore all'esofago.[1]

James Ridout "Jesse" Winchester Jr. (May 17, 1944 – April 11, 2014) was an American-Canadian musician and songwriter. He was born and raised in the southern United States. Opposed to the Vietnam War, he moved to Canada in 1967 to avoid being drafted into the US military while the US engaged in the Vietnam War and began his career as a solo artist. His highest-charting recordings were of his own songs, "Yankee Lady" in 1970 and "Say What" in 1981. He became a Canadian citizen in 1973, gained amnesty in the U.S. in 1977 and resettled in Memphis, Tennessee in 2002.[1]
