Ha ottenuto molte nomination Grammy, e sei album d'oro, incluso Cowboys Songs, il primo album di musica cowboy a essere disco d'oro dopo Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs del 1959 di Marty Robbins. Murphey ha inciso le hit Wildfire, Carolina in the Pines, What's Forever For, A Long Line of Love, What She Wants, Don't Count the Rainy Days e Geronimo's Cadillac.
