Biografia

Nato in Kentucky, ha intrapreso l'attività musicale nel 2004, anno in cui ha fondato il gruppo Sunday Valley. Il gruppo si è sciolto nel 2012.

Dal 2010 Simpson vive con la moglie a Nashville (Tennessee). Nel 2014 la coppia ha avuto un figlio.

Nel giugno 2013 ha debuttato da solista con l'album High Top Mountain.

Il suo secondo album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music è uscito nel maggio 2014 ed è stato prodotto da Dave Cobb. Il titolo si riferisce a Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, album di Ray Charles del 1962. Riceve una candidatura ai Grammy Awards 2015 nella categoria "Miglior album americana" e vince tre Americana Music Awards.

Nell'aprile 2016 pubblica A Sailor's Guide to Earth, primo album per una "major", ossia Atlantic Records. Con questo disco raggiunge la posizione numero 3 della classifica Billboard 200.[1] Inoltre riceve due candidature ai Grammy Awards 2017, nelle categorie "Album dell'anno" e "Miglior album country".

Nel 2019 collabora al film I morti non muoiono di Jim Jarmusch, fornendo il brano che dà il titolo al film, The Dead Don't Die, e comparendo in un cameo nel ruolo di zombie.

John Sturgill Simpson (born June 8, 1978)[2][3] is an American country music singer-songwriter and actor.[4][5] As of February 2022, he has released seven albums as a solo artist. His first two albums, High Top Mountain[6] and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, were independently released in 2013 and 2014, respectively.[7] The latter was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album,[8] listed 18th on Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2014,"[9] and named among "NPR's 50 Favorite Albums of 2014."[10] His third album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth, was released in April 2016 on Atlantic Records and was Simpson's first major-label release,[11] later earning him Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards while also being nominated for Album of the Year.[12] Simpson's fourth album, Sound & Fury, was released on September 27, 2019, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards. He released two albums in 2020 - Cuttin' Grass, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 - which feature bluegrass interpretations of songs from across his catalog, and marked his return to independent music. His seventh studio album, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, was released in August 2021. Simpson's style has been met with critical favor and frequent comparisons to outlaw country.
