Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (1868 oder 1869 in Portsmouth, Virginia[1] – 24. Juni 1933[2]) war eine US-amerikanische Opernsängerin (Sopran).
Leben
Jones’ Mutter sang im Chor einer nahegelegenen Baptistenkirche; ihr Vater war ein Zimmermann und Pastor, der in die Sklaverei hineingeboren wurde.[1] Die Familie zog nach Providence, Rhode Island, wo die junge Sissierette in der Kirche sang und ihre Gesangsausbildung begann.[1] Ihre Ehe mit David Jones endete in Scheidung; ihre Tochter Mabel starb bereits im Alter von 2 Jahren.[1]
Im Jahr 1893 war Jones die erste afroamerikanische Frau, die ein Konzert auf der Hauptbühne der Carnegie Hall gab.[1]

Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (January 5, 1868 or 1869[1] – June 24, 1933)[2] was an American soprano. She sometimes was called "The Black Patti" in reference to Italian opera singer Adelina Patti.[3] Jones' repertoire included grand opera, light opera, and popular music.[3] Trained at the Providence Academy of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music,[1] Jones made her New York debut in 1888 at Steinway Hall,[1] and four years later she performed at the White House for President Benjamin Harrison.[2] She eventually sang for four consecutive presidents and the British royal family,[1][2][3] and met with international success.
