Controversy
Hanlon faced criticism for his vocal defense of Lillias White following her outbursts against a disabled audience member during a performance of Hadestown in October of 2022. During this performance, White interrupted the performance multiple times to reprimand an audience member who was using a captioning device provided by the theater to allow people with hearing loss to hear the show.[5] In a series of lengthy comments left on one of White’s Instagram posts,[6] Hanlon expressed the opinion that ableism is something that can be excused, citing his sexuality as justification for his views towards the disabled community. Several of Hanlon’s comments included the claim that White had issued an apology to the audience member, which was untrue at the time.[7] Hanlon’s social media following, which barely eclipses 7,000 Instagram followers,[8] demonstrated a generally negative view towards the actor’s comments.
