Early life

Popović was born on August 2, 1989 in Belgrade to Zoja Begolli (née Đoković), who was a ballet dancer at the National Theatre in Belgrade and lecturer at the Academy of Arts, and Srđan Popović, who worked as a sports journalist at the daily newspaper Večernje Novosti.[1][2][3] Grew up in the Paviljoni neighborhood of New Belgrade, he was raised by a single mother after losing his father in 1991. Popović has an older half-brother, Miša, who according to Relja exposed him to hip-hop during their childhood through artists such as Eminem, Jay-Z and Juice.[4] Before graduating from high school Relja was shot in stomach after trying to defend his girl friend in a pub, and had his kidney and spleen removed.[3]

Popović graduated from the Faculty of Media and Communications at the Singidunum University and also studied acting at the Academy of Arts in Belgrade.[5][3]

Career

Music

In 2005, Relja Popović began his music career alongside childhood friend Vladimir Matović as members of Elitni Odredi.[6] They released one studio album - Oko sveta (2010) and several singles, including "Beograd" (2011), "Ne koči", "Ljubavi moja" (2012), "Zapali grad" (2013) and "Alkohola litar" (2014). At the peak of their popularity, in 2015, Elitni Odredi went on indefinite hiatus to focus on solo projects.[6]

Relja pursued a solo career with single "Beograd još živi", released in April 2015 under IDJTunes.[7] Since then he has released numerous standalone singles and has collaborated with artists such as Coby, Cvija, Rasta, Devito and Nucci.

At the beginning of 2020, Popović established a record label imprint, called Made In Blkn Records, in distribution deal with IDJTunes. The company was expended to a clothing brand the following year.[8]

In March 2022, it was announced that Relja would become a judge and mentor on the televised singing competition IDJShow alongside Darko Dimitrov and Teodora Džehverović.[9] On 12 June, his contestant Amna Alajbegović was eventually declared the season winner after thirteen episodes of competing.[10]

Acting

Popović made his on screen debut in the short film Dremano oko (2003) directed by Vladimir Perišić. He continued working with Perišić, starring as the lead role in Ordinary People (2009). Popovic's performance in the movie saw critical acclaim, becoming the youngest recipient of the grand prix at the Sarajevo Film Festival.[11]

He also starred in the 2011 box office-success by Srđan Dragojević, titled The Parade, which reflects on the 2010 Belgrade Pride and deals with LGBT rights in Serbia.

In 2022, Popović received the main role in the crime drama series Besa.[12]

Personal life

In 2014, he started dating singer Nikolija Jovanović after Elitni Odredi had collaborated with her on their single "Alkohola litar".[13] They welcomed their first daughter, named Rea, on September 26, 2016.[14] The couple's second daughter was born on July 17, 2021.[15]
