Estuvo en una agrupación llamada Badlands, con su excompañero en Whitesnake Neil Murray (no confundir con la banda Badlands, creada por el guitarrista Jake E. Lee y el vocalista Ray Gillen).

Sykes tocó y compuso en el álbum de 1987 Whitesnake. Este fue el disco más exitoso de la banda, vendiendo cerca de 8 millones de copias solamente en los Estados Unidos, y conteniendo los reconocidos singles "Still of the Night", "Is This Love?" y "Here I Go Again".
