Ha conseguito successo internazionale nel 2021 con il singolo Love Nwantiti, che gli ha permesso di raggiungere la vetta delle classifiche di sei paesi e le top ten di altrettanti diciotto.
Biografia
Ekweani è nato a Kaduna, nel nord-est della Nigeria, e ha mosso i primi passi verso la musica grazie al padre, che era direttore di un coro presso una chiesa locale.[2] Crescendo ha iniziato a suonare strumenti come il pianoforte e la batteria, per poi sperimentare la produzione con il software FL Studio.[3]
Nel 2014 si è trasferito a Lagos, in cerca di visibilità da parte delle etichette discografiche, riuscendo a firmare un contratto dapprima con la Loopy Music e in seguito con la Chocolate City.[4] L'11 settembre 2017 ha pubblicato il suo EP di debutto Who the Fuck Is CKay?,[5] mentre il 2 marzo 2018 ha reso disponibile il singolo Container, divenuto un successo radiofonico in patria.[6]
Il 30 agosto 2019 è uscito il secondo EP CKay the First, che contiene il brano Love Nwantiti.[7] Il 14 febbraio 2020 ne è stato reso disponibile il remix ufficiale realizzato in collaborazione con i connazionali Joeboy e Kuami Eugene;[8] ad esso hanno fatto seguito altre versioni della canzone, accompagnate da artisti di spicco europei e non come ElGrandeToto, Franglish e De La Ghetto.[9] Love Nwantiti riceve tuttavia notorietà a livello globale soltanto a partire dal settembre 2021, quando diventa virale sulle piattaforme Shazam e TikTok;[10] complice anche il suo utilizzo durante il Met Gala 2021,[11] irrompe nelle classifiche di più di trenta paesi, posizionandosi primo in Francia,[12] Paesi Bassi[13] e Svizzera,[14] terzo nella Official Singles Chart del Regno Unito[15] e 31º nella Billboard Hot 100 statunitense.[16]

Chukwuka Ekweani (born 16 July 1995), better known by his stage name Ckay (stylised as CKay), is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer signed to Warner Music South Africa,[1] and Atlantic Records.[2] He was formerly signed to Chocolate City, a member of Warner Music Group independent label services ADA. His international hit single "Love Nwantiti", also known as "Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ahh)", was released in 2019 by Chocolate City. On 29 March 2022, the song debuted at number one, following the launch of the Billboard Afrobeats chart.[3] On 9 May 2022, it became the first African song in history to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.[4]- [it] CKay
