La sua carriera artistica inizia negli anni 70 dove faceva parte di un duo folk "Matthew & Peter".
Trasferitosi nel 1978 a Los Angeles ha dato la sua voce ad alcuni jingles pubblicitari ed ha lavorato come corista con Bette Midler e Rickie Lee Jones.
Nel 1983 esce il suo primo album da solista, intitolato I Don't Speak the Language, il genere musicale è new wave e sinthpop (che andava per la maggiore in quel periodo) che ha un buon riscontro di vendite, ancora meglio andò il singolo Break My Stride che al ritmo di un sostenuto reggae scandito dal sintetizzatore, scalò le classifiche in tutto il mondo, un successo che non si ripeté più a questi livelli con le pubblicazioni seguenti. Di Break My Stride successivamente vennero fatte varie cover, la più famosa è quella eseguita dai Blue Lagoon (2004).
Poi arrivò la fase successiva della carriera: la composizione di musiche e canzoni in vari film e serie televisive anche molto popolari come Pretty Woman o Dawson's Creek.
