Il brano che dà il titolo all'album, Waiting for the Sun, non fa parte di questo disco, ma dell'album Morrison Hotel, pubblicato due anni dopo, nel 1970.

Il disco

Generalmente considerato il disco più "commerciale" della band, l'album fu l'unico dell'intera discografia dei Doors a raggiungere la posizione numero 1 nelle classifiche statunitensi Billboard 200 per quattro settimane e di quelle francesi e la numero 3 in Canada mentre il singolo Hello, I Love You raggiunse la posizione numero 1 in quella dei singoli per due settimane vincendo il disco d'oro. L'album riscosse un buon successo di vendite anche in Gran Bretagna dove raggiunse la posizione numero 16 in classifica, guadagnandosi il disco d'oro e successivamente quello di platino.

Struttura

La traccia Celebration of the Lizard, lungo poema morrisoniano dai toni apocalittici, avrebbe dovuto occupare l'intera seconda facciata dell'LP, ma il gruppo non riuscì mai a registrare una versione completa e convincente dell'intera composizione (essa sarebbe stata riproposta quasi completa solo successivamente ed in una versione dal vivo sull'album Absolutely Live del 1970), e sull'album rimase solo il frammento intitolato Not to Touch the Earth. Molti fan ipotizzarono quindi che, una volta scartata Celebration of the Lizard, fossero state riesumate due delle prime canzoni del gruppo, registrate nuovamente e utilizzate come "riempitivi". Questi brani sarebbero Hello, I Love You e Summer's Almost Gone, che risalivano al primo demo della band, datato 1965.

Questo album segnò anche il passaggio di Ray Manzarek da una tastiera Vox Continental a una Gibson G-101, l'organo con il quale suonò spesso dal vivo nei concerti di quel periodo.

Celebration of the Lizard e due take iniziali di Not to Touch the Earth sono state incluse come "bonus tracks" nella ristampa pubblicata in occasione del 40º anniversario del disco.

Critica

Sebbene si tratti di un album liricamente forte e che contiene alcuni brani rilevanti come la minacciosa Five to One, l'antimilitarista The Unknown Soldier e l'evocativa Spanish Caravan, musicalmente il disco è stato spesso criticato per il suo sound "soft-rock", ammorbidito rispetto ai primi due album della Band.

Waiting for the Sun is the third studio album by the American rock band the Doors. The album's 11 tracks were recorded between January and May 1968 at TTG Studios in Los Angeles. Released by Elektra Records on July 3, 1968, it became the band's only number one album (topping the charts for four weeks), while also included their second US number one single, "Hello, I Love You" (for two weeks starting August 3, 1968). The first single released off the record was "The Unknown Soldier," which peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became the band's first hit album in the UK, where it reached number 16.
