Детство и юность провёл в Африке, куда когда-то переехали его родители по экономическим соображениям. Отслужив в армии, Роджер первоначально планировал стать медиком и поступил в университет г. Кейптауна (ЮАР). После полутора лет обучения он отчислился и занялся педагогикой. В 1959 г. переехал в Великобританию, изучал зоологию, биохимию и морскую биологию. Продолжал петь в ночных клубах (это увлечение появилось у него ещё в Африке). Первый профессиональный альбом был выпущен в 1962 г. Весной 1964 г. женился, в браке выросло 5 детей.
Среди его мелодий наибольшую известность получила Song Sung Blue (Мелодия, которую поют с грустью).
