Break Every Rule ist das sechste Studioalbum von Tina Turner. Es erschien im September 1986 bei Capitol Records. Das Album erreichte Platz 1 in Deutschland[1] und der Schweiz, Platz 4 in den USA und Platz 2 in Österreich und Großbritannien.
Nachdem Private Dancer die Messlatte für Tina Turner hoch gelegt hatte, schaffte sie es mit Break Every Rule vielerorts an den Erfolg anzuknüpfen. So wurde das Album in den USA mit Platin ausgezeichnet.[2] Auch in Deutschland und Großbritannien erreichte das Album Platinstatus.
Die A-Seite des Vinylalbums wurde von Graham Lyle und Terry Britten produziert, die auch schon für die Hit-Single What’s Love Got to Do with It (1984) verantwortlich waren. Auf der B-Seite betätigten sich unter anderem Bob Clearmountain und Mark Knopfler als Produzenten.[3] Die Single Typical Male schaffte es bis auf Platz 2 der US-Charts. Back Were You Started erhielt den Grammy für die „Best Female Rock Vocal Performance“.[4]
Auf der Webseite Allmusic.com gab der Kritiker 3 von 5 Sternen und hörte mehr Vor- als Nachteile, und auch einige „Perlen“: „While Private Dancer would be a much better introduction to Turner’s work as a solo artist, this has more pluses than minuses.“[5]
