Hail to the Thief ist das sechste Studioalbum der britischen Alternative-Band Radiohead. Es erschien im Juni 2003 und belegte den ersten Platz der britischen Album-Charts. In Deutschland und der Schweiz erreichte es jeweils Platz 3, in Österreich Platz 6. Das Nachfolgealbum In Rainbows erschien am 10. Oktober 2007.

Beschreibung

Der Titel des Albums gilt aufgrund seiner Allegorie zu „Hail to the Chief“ als Anspielung auf den US-amerikanischen Präsidenten George W. Bush und dessen knappen Wahlsieg 2000. Dies wies die Band in Interviews jedoch als eine interpretatorische Reduktion des Aussagegehaltes zurück. Vielmehr wollen sie ihn, als auch das Album selbst, als eine Reflexion der Stimmung der Zeit, in der „Hail to the Thief“ entstand, verstanden wissen. Die durch verschieden eingesetzte Instrumente stark variierende Klangtiefe des in Los Angeles aufgenommenen Albums unterscheidet sich, ähnlich wie alle Radiohead-Alben, von seinen Vorgängern. Allerdings wird, anknüpfend an Kid A und Amnesiac, neben ruhigen Piano-Intros und klirrenden Gitarrenriffs verstärkt auf elektronische Elemente zurückgegriffen, beispielsweise bei Where I End and You Begin (the sky is falling in) oder bei Myxomatosis (judge, jury and executioner). So finden sich neben ruhigeren Balladen, wie bspw. A Wolf at the Door (it girl rag doll) oder des bereits zwei Jahre zuvor geplanten Liedes There There (the boney king of nowhere), sowohl düster-aggressive Lieder mit Electronica-Elementen wie bspw. Myxomatosis (judge, jury and executioner), als auch Einflüsse von Minimal in Backdrifts (honeymoon is over) und Alternative Rock in 2 + 2 = 5 (the lukewarm).

Jeder Song des Albums hat einen alternativen Titel, so zum Beispiel 2 + 2 = 5 noch The Lukewarm.
