Reggatta de Blanc ist das zweite Studioalbum von The Police. Es erschien im Oktober 1979 bei A&M Records. Das Album erreichte Platz eins der Charts in Großbritannien[1] und in Australien, in den USA Platz 25.[2] 1980 gewann die Band für das Titelstück den Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.[3] Das Magazin Rolling Stone setzte das Album auf Platz 369 seiner 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten.[4]

Entstehung

Der Albumtitel ist ein Wortspiel über White Reggae.[5] Reggatta de Blanc ist ein Lied ohne Text, das sich als Improvisation aus Can't Stand Losing You entwickelte.[6]

Anders als beim nachfolgenden Album konnten The Police ohne Zeitdruck an die Aufnahmen gehen. Das Album entstand in insgesamt vier Wochen Aufnahmezeit, die jedoch über mehrere Monate verteilt wurden.[7]

Die Band ging mit einem vergleichsweise kleinen Budget an die Aufnahmen – obwohl die Plattenfirma A&M Records größeres genehmigt hätte –, das von ihren Gewinnen durch die Verkäufe von Outlandos d’Amour abgedeckt wurde.[9] Dadurch blieb sie vergleichsweise unabhängig.

Rezeption

Greg Prato von der Webseite Allmusic.com schrieb, durch konstantes Touren sei der Reggae-Rock der Band zur Perfektion gebracht worden. Das Album sei produktionstechnisch polierter und bezüglich des Songwritings ausgefeilter als der Vorgänger. Zudem seien zwei Hitsingles enthalten gewesen. Er vergab drei von fünf Sternen.[5]

Reggatta de Blanc is the second studio album by British rock band the Police, released on 2 October 1979 by A&M Records. It was the band's first release to top the UK Albums Chart and features their first two UK number-one singles: "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". In early 1980, the album was reissued in the United States on two 10" discs, one album side per disc, and as a collector's edition with a poster of the band.
