The title “KG0516” references a combination of digits, dates, and initials, recalling the moment Karol and her parents signed her first major contract under her stage name (KAROL G). “My parents signed a contract on my behalf on May 16th, 2006 and that was the first time that my name as ‘Karol G’ was written”.[4]
On 7 November 2019, Karol released "Tusa" with American artist Nicki Minaj, which received immediate commercial success. Following this, the singer stated she was ready to embark on a world tour but, due to the varying international lockdowns (as safety against COVID-19, these plans were momentarily postponed after just one show.
On 6 July 2020, Karol released the follow-up single and accompanying video for "Ay, Dios Mio!", with the hugely successful anthem "Bichota" following on 23 October 2020. Currently, as of November 2022, the YouTube music video for “Bichota” has been viewed more than 1.1 billion times.[5] This success is second only to the YouTube music video for “Tusa”, which (also as of November 2022) has been played over 1.3 billion times.[6]
The following year, on 12 February 2021, "Location" (featuring her then-partner Anuel AA and fellow Colombian artist J. Balvin) was released as the last single prior to the album’s release. The music video for “Location” has over 427 million views on YouTube, as of year’s end, 2022.[7]
On March 16, 2021 Karol G announced via a half-minute video the release of the album alongside its title and release date, while the cover art, which was photographed by David LaChapelle.[8] was released the next day. The tracklist was revealed the following week.
The album was released on March 25, 2021,[9] alongside the release of "El Makinon" (featuring Mariah Angeliq), as the fifth single from the album. This song would go on to be the third most successful single off the album. The slower ballad "El Barco" was released, and performed on an appearance on The Jimmy Fallon Show. The Mexican guitar-flavoured anthem (to “dumping abusive boyfriends”) "200 Copas" was also released as a single, and was performed with a large Mariachi band at the 2021 Premios Juventud awards show.
