Background
Tove Styrke wrote "Mistakes" with Elof Loelv, who produced the track, for her third studio album Sway (2018).[1] The two reportedly spent months "perfecting" the song. The chorus was altered several times before they settled on the "stomping vocoder breakdown".[2] In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, Styrke said, "I really think it pays off to spend a lot of time on production and also songwriting. It makes it richer in a sense."[2] The song was digitally released on 15 September 2017 through Sony Music as the second single of the album.[3] The single's artwork depicts an illustrated lamb.[4] A remix produced by Swedish trio VAX was released on 3 November 2017 with a new cover art depicting a rose.[5]
Composition
"Mistakes" is an electropop song.[6] The production includes sound effects from various sources, including a flickering street-light lamp, a cellphone, and a zipper. Styrke said, "I want a song to be like one of those pictures that you can look at and find new things in every time."[2]
Reception
Hannah Mylrea of NME referred to it as "the glorious musical equivalent of getting butterflies in your stomach", and called it "pure pop perfection".[7] The song debuted and peaked at number 42 on the Swedish singles chart on 22 September 2017. It spent a total of six weeks on the chart.[8] The song received a gold certification by the Swedish Recording Industry Association (GLF).[9]
