"Potion" is a song by Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris, English singer Dua Lipa and American rapper Young Thug. The song was released on 27 May 2022 as the lead single from Harris's sixth studio album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 (2022). The song marks the second collaboration between Harris and Lipa following their 2018 single "One Kiss", with Thug previously having featured on Harris' 2017 single "Heatstroke".

Background


After announcing his sixth studio album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 in April 2022,[1][2] Calvin Harris announced on 23 May that he would be releasing a new single the following Friday along with posting a teaser of the song.[3] Rumours then began circling that the song was called "Potion" and that Dua Lipa and Young Thug would feature on it.[4] The following day, Harris posted a TikTok video in which he confirmed the title as "Potion", explained some of the instrumentals as well as confirming Lipa's involvement where he showed a video of them FaceTimeing. It was also reported that day that Young Thug would also be involved.[5][6] Harris formally announced the single the next day.[7] This marks Harris and Lipa's second collaboration following their single "One Kiss" in 2018.[8]


Composition


Musically, "Potion" is a funk-inspired pop-EDM and post-disco song that sees Lipa recount the "potion" for love singing "late night conversations, electric emotions / sprinkled with a little bit of sex / and that's a potion" in the chorus.[9][10] The song features the use of a Rhodes piano, a Fender Stratocaster guitar and a bass.[11][12]
