A pesar del gran éxito de sus anteriores álbumes, R.E.M. decide hacer cambios en su estilo musical y en sus hábitos de grabación, como el cambio de su productor (Joe Boyd) y el lugar de grabación (Londres).

Tras su lanzamiento, Fables of the Reconstruction llegó al número # 28 en las listas de EE. UU. y obtuvo mejores resultados en el Reino Unido, alcanzando el puesto # 35.

The Joe Boyd-produced album was the first recorded by the group outside the United States. It is a concept album[citation needed] with Southern Gothic themes and characters.
