Fables of the Reconstruction стал первым диском R.E.M., записанным в Лондоне[12] с известным продюсером Джо Бойдом, который ранее сотрудничал с Ником Дрейком и группой Fairport Convention[13]. Сессии сопровождались сложностями, отразившимися на звучании альбома[4]: в отличие от предыдущих работ группы на Fables of the Reconstruction заметно влияние психоделии[13].

Альбом сопровождался тремя синглами. Композиция «Driver 8» достигла в чарте Top Rock Tracks журнала «Billboard» 22-й позиции, а «Cant Get There from Here» заняла в том же хит-параде 14-е место[14]. Fables of the Reconstruction, also known as Reconstruction of the Fables, is the third studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released on I.R.S. Records on June 10, 1985. The Joe Boyd-produced album was the first recorded by the group outside the United States. It is a concept album[citation needed] with Southern Gothic themes and characters.
