Dave Simpson de The Guardian complimente Alicia Keys pour son chant et son jeu au piano mais regrette que l'album n'aille pas assez loin et trouve quelques mélodies décevantes[9].

Pour Métro, l'album est une véritable réussite, notamment en raison des différents collaborateurs de l'album, comme Emeli Sandé, Frank Ocean, Jamie xx, etc. Girl on Fire est ainsi un « opus éclectique mais cohérent, audacieux mais sans jamais céder aux sirènes de l'Eurodance qui “polluent” les trois quarts de la production r'n'b actuelle »[14].

Girl on Fire is the fifth studio album by American singer and songwriter Alicia Keys. It was released on November 22, 2012, being Keys' first release with RCA Records following Sony Music Entertainment's decision to close J Records during a company reshuffle. The album is an R&B album with elements of different musical styles, including rock, electro, reggae and hip hop. It features a largely minimalist production, includes piano-driven songs and balances traditional R&B with atypical chords and melodic changes.

Произошло это вскоре после брака Киз с рэпером и продюсером Swizz Beatz и рождения первого ребёнка (Egypt). Диск сразу возглавил американский альбомный хит-парад Billboard 200, став 5-м её альбомом во главе главного чарта Америки. Одноимённый с ним сингл Girl on Fire достиг № 11 в чарте Billboard Hot 100[7].
