L'album è stato pubblicato come LP per l'etichetta Blue Note Records (BLP 1521) e conteneva solo i primi 6 brani musicali.
La stessa etichetta ne ha poi pubblicato una successiva edizione su Compact disc a cui sono stati aggiunti gli ultimi 2 brani musicali, in precedenza inseriti nell'album A Night at Birdland, Vol. 3 pubblicato nel 1983 in Giappone.
Per quest'edizione è stata presa come riferimento quella masterizzata da Rudy Van Gelder e pubblicata nel 2001.
Parte dell'annuncio iniziale di Pee Wee Marquette è stato riportato in apertura dell'album Hand on the torch realizzato dagli US3 nel 1993.

A Night at Birdland ist der Live-Mitschnitt eines Jazz-Konzerts vom 21. Februar 1954 mit Art Blakey und seinem neu gegründeten Quintett Art Blakey Quintet. Das Konzert fand im berühmten New Yorker Nachtklub Birdland statt und umfasste fünf Sets.[1] Es wurde vom Plattenlabel Blue Note Records im selben Jahr auf drei nacheinander erscheinenden 10-Zoll-Schallplatten veröffentlicht. Bereits 1956 wurde die Zusammenstellung, ergänzt um die Aufnahme eines weiteren Titels vom selben Konzert, auf zwei separaten 12-Zoll-Schallplatten veröffentlicht.[en] A Night at Birdland Vol. 1
A Night at Birdland Vol. 1 is a 1954 release by jazz artist Art Blakey, and a quintet which featured Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver and Curly Russell. One of the earliest hard bop recordings, it was first released by Blue Note Records as a 10" LP (BLP 5037) and then as a 12" LP (BLP 1521) containing material from the second 10" album. It was reissued for the first time on CD in 1987 with two additional tracks (an alternate take of Wee-Dot and an improvisational piece titled Blues), previously released on a 2 LP Compilation in 1975 called Live Messengers (BN-LA473-J2). The CD was reissued again in 2001 as an "RVG Edition" remastered by Rudy Van Gelder with the tracks in a different order. The 1987 CD used the second 12" LP cover, the 2001 CD revived the original 10" LP cover.[2]- [it] A Night at Birdland, Vol. 1
